Munster Junior League Division 2 Clonakilty v Mallow 5th Nov 17   08/11/2017

Munster Junior League Division 2

Clonakilty 42: Mallow 10

After a two week break Clonakilty’s first XV were roaring and ready to build on from their impressive streak in their last few games and they did not disappoint! Clon kicked off into a glorious day in Shannonvale near perfect conditions. From the get go the home side went to work on the physical Mallow defence. Within the first ten minutes Clon were awarded a penalty which Purcell took to the posts and slotted over with ease.  Soon after Clon were on attack again breaking down the Mallow defence at every opportunity. The team play in bringing the ball up the line was superb and after a super run from Purcell, Clonakilty went over for their 1st try of the day when scrum half Gary Purtill bound over the line for his first try in a Clon jersey. It was followed up with the conversion putting the score at 10-0 to Clon. The boys in red and green followed up with a second successful penalty that grew their lead.  Mallow followed up with an attacking play that tested the Clonakilty defence to the max. Clon handled this pressure well and soon had themselves taken out of danger and back into the driving seat with a counter attack. Once Clonakilty turned the attack they quickly turned it into a second try when Cosmin Rosu went over over putting the scoreboard at 18-0. Mallow came on strong though and showed their grit when their number 10 made a fabulous run through the Clonakilty defence and over for Mallows only try and conversion of the day. Clon did not retreat and worked hard for the rest of the half to make up for their error in defence. Just before the half time whistle, Oige Scannell made an immense run for the line followed on with support from his teammates. Olan Deane then took the ball to run over for a 3rd Clon try just at the break.

Half time score Clonakilty 23 – Mallow 7

The second half began with a penalty for Mallow bridging the gap to 23-10 to the home side. Clonakilty continued to dominate though and soon enough they showed their authority on this game once again when Mark Purcell gained another try and conversion for the locals. This was followed up from yet another soon team display when Courtney Canning attacked the Mallow line made a super pass to Gavin Ridgeway who took the ball over for the important 5th try letting the scoreboard read 37-10. The Clonakilty men continued to govern the game allowing Mallow very little room for improvement. Maurice Shanley notched up another try for Clonakilty late in the game finishing off the game at 42-10. Mallow were unlucky not to score late on a build back when they knocked on the ball just as they stretched for the Clonakilty line but the game finished at 42-10 to the home side.

It was an impressive victory for the Clonakilty men who showed grit and determination to continue their positive winning run. Next week the team take on Kinsale in the Clubs Challenge Shield at home again in Shannonvale. Kick-off is at 2pm please come and show your support.
