Junior Clubs Challenge Shield

Clonakilty 43: Kinsale 19

Clonakiltys first XV were in action at home again last Sunday taking on Kinsale in the Challenge Shield. It was a beautiful day with near perfect conditions to set up this contest. Kinsale were first out of the blocks and put on a strong attack against the Clonakilty defences which led to them taking the lead running in a try in the first 15 minutes. It didn’t take long however for the home side to take stock and came back fighting with an attacking play that saw Maurice Shanley make a massive run for the line eventually offloading to Andy McCarthy who dove over the line and in for Clon’s first try of the day, followed up with the conversion putting the score at 7-5. Kinsale continued to battle and pulled back the lead with a successful penalty between the posts. Clonakilty upped the ante again with a quick response to the visitors when Oige Scannell blasted over for Clons second try. The half continued with both sides battling to come out on top. Kinsale’s attack came on strong and an immense defence was needed by the home side to keep the visitors at bay and eventually after a colossal attack on the Clon line, Kinsale had to settle for 3 points when they were awarded a penalty narrowing the gap to 14-11. Clonakilty dominated for the remainder of the half with numerous attempts to break down the Kinsale defences and were unlucky in many of these attempts. Eventually it was out-half Mark Purcell who found the space and sprinted over the line. The first half ended with the home side still dominating and they were unlucky not to steal another try just at the whistle.  But it was a confident start from the boys in red and green, a confidence that was set to continue.

Half Time Score: Clonakilty 19 – Kinsale 11

Kinsale narrowed the margins again at the beginning of the second half with a penalty on target bring the gap to just five but it was Clonakilty’s who responded well when they replied with a well worked team try that saw Rob Howick charge over for Clon’s 4th. Kinsale continued to nip at Clonakilty’s heels though as they went to work at the breakdown. Clonakilty’s complacency allowed the visitors to gain a second try. Kinsale showed their strength and Clon now new they needed to up their game to maintain their lead and finish out this game. The Clon men did not disappoint and went about demolishing the Kinsale defences and make up for the tries they had given away. It didn’t take long for Clonakilty to find their stride again and Rob Howick ran in another Clon try followed with a successful conversion attempt putting the score at 33-19 to the home side. A penalty from Mark Purcell made it 36-19 and the Clon boys were on the home straight. Clonakilty finished off this battle with a 6th and final try coming from Maurice Shanley who runs straight under the posts for another superb try. And great way to finish a great day and giving a final score of 43-19 to Clonakilty.

Another big boost to Clon RFC moral but Kinsale are a side that must be respected and Clonakilty are well aware that when they face them again in the league in 2 weeks’ time it will not be an easy clash.

Next Sunday Clon’s first XV travel away to Mitchelstown in the rescheduled league game.
