U14 v Bantry 11th November 2017

South Munster League Phase One

Clonakilty 7: Bantry 29

A tough morning in Durrus for the Clon lads who found themselves under pressure from the first whistle against a Bantry side who were on maximum League points going into this game. From the outset, the hosts took the game to Clon, choosing to kick over an early 3-pointer after being awarded a fourth minute penalty. To be fair to Bantry, all of the pressure being applied in the first half came from them but a resolute Clon defence made nothing easy for them. Inevitably, Bantry's constant pressure was to pay off and following a mid-half Bantry try and conversion, Bantry led deservedly at the break on a scoreline of 10-nil.

Clonakilty started the second half the stronger without the reward of a score and once again the hosts started to turn the tie in their favour with their strength in the low tackle being a big feature in their game. However, against the run of play, Clon's number 8, Ethan Jennings sprinted clear from his own half to touch down for the visitor’s first try. From a difficult angle, assured kicker, Ben Reilly converted expertly to leave the game at a one-score margin, 10-7. Unfortunately, this was as good as it got for Clon as soon after, Bantry scored another converted try to stretch the lead to 17-7. This score would probably have been a fair reflection on the game but to rub salt to the wounds, Bantry added another two tries (plus one conversion) in the last five minutes. No doubting that Bantry were the better team on the day but the final scoreline of 29-7 was a bit hard to take in a game played in a very sporting manner. Many thanks to the host club for providing some very-welcomed hot drinks and sandwiches for Clon's players, mentors and travelling support.

Next up is a hugely important League game against neighbours, Skibbereen. Game takes place at the Vale, this Saturday, Nov 18th, 12.30pm kick-off. A win is needed here to ensure that the lads progress further in the competition. Please come out to support and encourage the players.
