Clonakilty v Mitchelstown 19th Nov 2017 Junior League Division 2   22/11/2017

Munster Junior League Division 2

Clonakilty 17: Mitchelstown 13

Clonakilty’s first XV travelled to Mitchelstown last Sunday for their rescheduled bout in the league. Conditions were messy so Clonakilty needed to play clever to take a handle on this game. Mitchelstown were first to get onto the scoreboard when they had a successful penalty attempt after a mere 3 minutes. Clon worked hard to make up their error but found it difficult to power through the Mitchelstown defence. Eventually the clon boys got into their rhythm after a great run from Maurice Shanley and Andy McCarthy; Cosmin found the gap and took the ball over the line for Clonakilty’s first try putting the score back to 5-3 to the visitors. Mitchelstown came back strong and soon after punished Clonakilty for their errors in defence which led to the home side scoring their first try and conversion of the day giving them the edge again 10 points to 5. The Clon boys battled on working well to retain the ball and move up the field. Eventually just before the half time whistle, Ger McCarthy made a gallant effort to force his way through the Mitchelstown defence and stretched himself over the line for a second Clon try. Mark Purcell followed up with the conversion putting the Clon boys ahead again going into the break.

Half Time Score – Clonakilty 12: Mitchelstown 10

Clonakilty made a much better start to the second half and worked hard to put Mitchelstown defences under serious pressure. Clon maintained their position firmly in the Mitchelstown half for the first 25 minutes, attacking well but unfortunately not reaping the rewards with any scores. Their error count came against them and allowed Mitchelstown to keep them at bay just. Then eventually after some great teamwork off a scrum, Ger McCarthy once again stood up and was counted and powered over the line for a 3rd Clonakilty scrum giving the visitors and 7 point lead. Clonakilty’s penalty came against them once again and gave Mitchelstown a life line when they took an easy 3 points to close the gap. Clonakilty tried hard for the rest of the game to take another try from the home side but Mitchelstown held out until the final whistle, the final score reading 17-13 to Clonakilty. It was a solid performance from Clon, their patience was tested at times but they should grit and determination to find the result eventually. Next week Clonakilty travel to Kinsale on Friday night at 8pm for their next league game.
