U13 League 18th November 2017

Clonakilty 30: Kanturk 19

This was the U13s third league game and first away game. With one win and one loss so far, the long trip to Kanturk would soon reflect the metal of this squad.

The omens looked good from the start with the Clon boys travelling with a full squad of 22 and nearer to 20 supporters. Kanturk’s pitch has a sizable fall and skipper Patrick McCarthy made a call to play against the fall in the first half. It did give the home side an advantage and they were 14 points up after 15 minutes, with two runaway tries against the run of play. To be fair to the hosts their contest at the breakdown and speed of hands caused Clon a few problems but the boys in red and green didn’t panic. They started to dominate the scrums and lineouts and it was from the base of one of those scrums Captain and man of the match Patrick McCarthy picked from just inside their 10 metre line to score in the corner. Clon kept the ball tight for the remainder of the half with the forwards working tirelessly .Paul Murphy and Killian Herlihy picked and drove at the opposition to great effect. The rest of the pack set up great ruck ball for Sean Og O Flynn to get his backline going. Great running by centres Elliot Ager and Taylor Murphy kept the Kanturk backline busy. But it was the skipper who again crossed the line from a Kanturk scrum, won against the head by hooker Donnacha Walsh. In fact this was the second of four tries McCarthy was to score during the game, scoring again before half time leaving Clon a point ahead at half time, 15-14.

With the strength of the squad Clon had, they were able to bring on fresh legs in crucial positions. That coupled with the advantage of the fall of ground, they were able to expand their running game, running more ball out the backs and out half Ronan Hayes had some nice kicks for touch. Sustained pressure on the Kanturk line led to a determined Oscar Kingston crossing the line in the left corner. Clon now were on top on all aspects of play and sub scrum half Finnian Neville crossed the line again with a great individual try. Patrick McCarthy fittingly finished the scoring with his fourth try, leaving the final score 30-14. All the conversion shots were in difficult positions, so no joy from the kicking tee.

A great individual display by Patrick McCarthy has to be noted but a mighty squad performance will have pleased the coaches the most.
