Munster Junior League Division 2

Clonakilty 11: Kinsale 12

It was a bitterly cold night under lights down in Kinsale last Friday when Clonakilty’s first XV travelled down to do battle with Kinsale again this time in the league. Clonakilty were hoping to repeat their performance that see them beat Kinsale in the Challenge Shield two weeks previously but Kinsale were out for revenge.

Kinsale kicked the game off and from the start Clonakilty dominated working well to mark their authority on this game. After a great kick up the field from full back Aaron Hayes, Clonakilty were in prime position to score in the first 10 minutes. Eventually they had to make do for now with a penalty converted by Mark Purcell to gain 3 points. Clonakilty continued to dominate with a strong scrum that halted any chance of a Kinsale counter attack. Another super kick up the line put Clonakilty in the attacking seat again. Clonakilty attacked the Kinsale line with ferocity and eventually Kevin Buckley who bounded over the line for a Clon try putting the score at 8-0 to the visitors. Kinsale worked hard to make it up and made their way into an attacking zone to start testing the visitor’s defences. But Clonakilty’s defence work from the likes of Moss Downey and Courtney Canning was superb; turning over ball making sure Kinsale remained scoreless at half time. Kinsale errors and penalty count came to Clon’s advantage and just before half time Clonakilty were awarded another penalty which Purcell slotted over at ease putting the half time score at 11-0. Clonakilty dominated the first half and had chances to boost their lead which would have helped to hold out in what turned out to be a very trying 2nd half for Clonakilty.

Half Time Score – Clonakilty 11: Kinsale 0

The second half saw the game swing in a totally different direction for both sides. Kinsale were awarded a penalty early and chance they took to put themselves on the scoreboard after 45 minutes. Clon continued to try and make chances for themselves but found it hard to move the ball quick enough to break through the Kinsale defence. Kinsale were soon awarded a second penalty which again they took to the posts and slotted over narrowing the gap to 11-6 to the visitors. Kinsale seemed to grow in strength from this and put themselves in a dangerous attacking position up on the Clonakilty line with a scrum to Kinsale. For the 10minutes that followed Clonakilty endured wave after wave of attack from the home side who tried to break through without success. It was a phenomenal sight for all Clonakilty supporters watching to see each player play their role in the pack, throw their bodies on the line and drive the Kinsale players back in an enormous effort. Kinsale had to make do with another 3 points after being awarded a questionable penalty bridging the gap to 11-9. Clonakilty showed strength of character for the rest of the half as they watched all their efforts diminished by some dubious refereeing decisions which saw Kinsale being awarded two more penalties that they converted giving them a 1 point lead to usurp the lead and ultimately led to them winning the game. Clonakilty produced a performance that they should be proud of as they kept fighting till the very end but unfortunately outside influences gave them no rub of the green to come out on top of a game that they deserved to win.

Clonakilty will take on Old Christians at home in Shannonvale in their final league game before the Christmas break. Kick-off is as always at 2.30pm please come out and show your support.
