Munster Junior League Division 2

Clonakilty 54: Old Christians 19

It was a beautiful Sunday in Shannonvale when Clonakilty’s first XV lined out against old rivals Old Christians in their last league game before the Christmas break. Clonakilty were hoping to improve from their upsetting loss against Kinsale and they did not disappoint.

Clonakilty started well attacking Old Christians from the get go. The home side began their assault early when Rob Howick ran over Clon’s first try within the first 10 minutes which was quickly followed by a try from Olan Deane both tries successfully converted by Eoghan Deasy to give Clon the perfect start and see them go 14-0 up. Clonakilty continued to work hard with some great work from Danny Murphy to strengthen Clonakilty’s hold over the visitors. Soon afterwards it was Michael Peter O’Regans turn to run over the Old Christians line after some great work from a Clon scrum in an attacking position. The visitors worked hard to gain back some control of the half and soon scored their first try putting the score at 21-7. The home side did not let up though and next it was Oige Scannell who glided through the Old Christians defence and score Clon’s 4th try of the day. The battle continued with Old Christians putting the Clon defences to the test but it was the home side that finished the half with another try after a great kick up the line from scrum half Garry Purtill then a turnover off the Old Christians lineout putting the Clonakilty in a strong position at the break.

Half Time Score – Clonakilty 35: Old Christians 7

Clonakilty continued to destruct the Old Christian defence in the second half. The home side dominated in every area and soon Petrus Vorster dived for the line and over for Clonakilty’s 6th try of the day. Clonakilty confidence grew and after a fantastic break from Cosmin Rosu, Olan Deane ran over another try for Clonakilty putting the score at 47-7. Old Christians valiantly fought on and were able to grasp some handle over the home side running in two tries bridging the gap to 47-19. But Clonakilty remained resilient and made up for any errors they had made in the middle of the half when Oige Scannell placed the ball down under the posts for Clon’s 8th and final try. It followed up with the conversion from Eoghan Deasy who had a near perfect kicking performance for the entire 80 minutes leaving the final score at 54-19. It was an exciting clash between the sides with 12 tries between them. The two sides will meet again in the semi-final of the Challenge Shield on the 7th of January which no doubt will be another exciting bout. Clonakilty first team finish up for the Christmas break in a strong position in the league table and will surely hope to grow and impress again in the New Year.
