Junior Clubs Challenge Shield Clon v Old Christians 7th Jan 18   10/01/2018

Junior Clubs Challenge Shield – Semi Final

Clonakilty 10: Old Christians 8

Clonakilty kicked off 2018 with a win last Sunday getting them through to their first final of the season. Clon faced off against a strong Old Christians side who were hoping to get revenge after two heavy defeats to Clon already this season.

Old Christians kicked off on a beautiful Sunday afternoon at home and straight away showed off their power, putting Clonakilty defences to the test. Clon could only holed out the home side for the first 10 minutes when Old Christians powered over for a try giving them an early advantage. Clonakilty tried hard to break down the strong Old Christians attack put ill-discipline and lack of patience soon after cost them another 3 points when Old Christians were awarded a penalty leaving Clonakilty trailing 8-0. Clonakilty worked harder for the rest of the half to regain control over the home side and managed to put themselves in an attacking position when they were awarded a penalty which Eoghan Deasy kicked up the line and into the Old Christians 22’. From the line out captain Stephen Cotter put in a great ball into the hands of Olan Deane which he took down off the line out and forced his way through to throw himself over the try line giving Clonakilty their first try of the game. Eoghan Deasy followed it up with the conversion turning the game and putting Clonakilty just 1 point behind at 7-8. Clonakilty continued to dominate for the rest of the half and were unlucky not to create another score before half time.

Half Time Score – Clonakilty 7: Old Christians 8

The second half could not be described as ‘pretty’ game of rugby to watch. Both sides continued to battle in this dog fight with neither side giving an inch. The game was played primarily between the two 22’s both sides having chances and pushing hard to gain scores. But both sides were inundated with handling errors showing that conditions made it hard for either side to make a clean break for the try line. Towards the end of the game it was Old Christians discipline that created their downfall with their penalty count rising and Clonakilty using every opportunity with some great attacking play from Peter Shallow and Andy McCarthy. In the dying minutes Clonakilty put themselves into a strong position within the Old Christians 22’. Mark Purcell made an attempt to steal the lead with a drop goal attempt that unfortunately just fell short. But all was not lost for Clonakilty when they were awarded a penalty under the posts which Purcell slotted over with ease this time putting the score at 10-8 to the visitors just before the final whistle stealing the win for Clonakilty in the nick of time.

It was a hard fought battle but a battle won for Clonakilty who will now face Ballincollig in the final of the Shield at the end of February. Next week sees the Clon boys returned to Shannonvale to take on Tralee in the second round of the Junior Cup kick off at 1pm.
