Munster Junior League Division 2

Clonakilty 21: Killarney 14

Clonakilty began the last leg of their league campaign last Sunday away to Killarney. The Clon men hoped to come away with a win to keep on the top side of the league table.

Clonakilty kicked off into good weather but under wet, muddy conditions underfoot. From the off Clonakilty challenged the Killarney defences and after a great kick up the field from Eoghan Deasy, the Clon men were inside the Killarney 22’ in a strong attacking position. Within the first 5 minutes Clonakilty were awarded their first penalty which Deasy slotted between the posts with ease. It wasn’t long until Clonakilty’s strong attacking play created a try for Aaron Hayes, followed by the conversion for Deasy putting Clon in front 10-0. Clonakilty continued for the rest of the half with this solid attack but were unlucky not to convert it into more scores with some great running attacks from Josh Wilcox and Aaron Hayes. Just before the break Clonakilty were awarded a second penalty which they took to the posts and converted again. At the break Clon held the Kerry men scoreless but had more to do to come away with the win.

Half-time score Clonakilty 13 – Killarney 0

Killarney kicked off the 2nd half and started to fight their way back into this game. Clonakilty defensive were put to the test early and Killarney worked well to create their first try putting the score at 13-7. Both sides battled away through the half with handling errors coming from both as they tried to deal with the poor pitch conditions. The home sides discipline came against them once again and Clonakilty were awarded their 3rd penalty of the day which soared between the posts. The Clon men continued to dominate and when they were awarded a scrum penalty under the Killarney posts they took full advantage with Stephen Cotter powering over the line and giving Clon a 21-7 advantage coming into the last 10 minutes of play. To Killarney’s credit the Kerry men never gave up and made sure that they came away with something from the day. They ferociously attacked the Clon defences putting them seriously to the test. Eventually their persistence was rewarded when they ran in their 2nd try and conversion just at the full time whistle.

Clonakilty will be happy with their performance as they face into the last 4 games of their league campaign. Next Sunday they take on Ballincollig at home in Shannonvale with kick off at 2.30pm. Please come out and show your support.
