County Cup Semi-Final Clonakilty V Skibbereen 13th April 2018   17/04/2018

County Cup Semi-Final

Clonakilty 21: Skibbereen 15

All roads led to Skibbereen last Friday night when Clonakilty RFC’s first XV took on old rivals Skibbereen in the replay of the county cup semi-final. Both sides know each other well and entered into a fierce battle which saw Clonakilty come out on top.

Skibbereen dominated most of the first half with an impressive attacking display right from the off. After 10 minutes the home side were awarded a penalty giving them a 3 point advantage. Clonakilty responded well with some impressive play to try and breach the Skibbereen 22’. Eventually the Clon men were rewarded when Gerard McCarthy powered under the posts and over for Clon’s first try of the evening followed by the conversion from Andy McCarthy. Skibbereen worked hard to regain control of the game and came out on top for the rest of the half pushing Clon defences to the max. Then just before the end of the half Skibbereen ran over their first try with a super run that gave them back the lead at the break.

Half time score: Clonakilty 7: Skibbereen 8

The second half of this contest turned out to be an exciting one with both sides fighting hard to come out on top. But it was Clonakilty who dominated and put on an impressive display of rugby. Clonakilty began to attack and started to break down the Skibbereen defence early. It was from a very clever kick and chase from Gerard McCarthy that eventually led to Moss Downey touching down for Clons 2nd try grasping the lead by 14-8. Skibbereen tried hard to regain control but the Clon men came into their stride and continued to dominate all over the field. It was from a Skibbereen attacking play that Clonakilty stole possession and worked the ball skilfully up the field and allowed Rob Howick to bound over for Clonakilty’s 3rd try. It was followed up by a third successful conversion for Andy McCarthy giving Clonakilty a comfortable lead of 19-8 in the last few moments of the game. To Skibbereens credit they continued to fight until the bitter end and scored a second try and conversion in the dying moments but it wasn’t enough to catch the high flying Clon boys.

It was a sweet victory for Clonakilty over their old rivals in a tough game with both sides putting on a great game and I’m sure we will see many more great battles between these two teams again. Clonakilty now progress to the final of the County Cup against Kanturk on Thursday 26th April in Cork Independent Park.

But before that Clonakilty will take on Ballincollig in the final of the challenge shield tomorrow night Wednesday at 7.30pm in Cork Independent. The club are delighted to have two opportunities to bring home some silverware this season and hope that people will come out and support this great team!
