Cork County Cup

Clonakilty 32: Kanturk 24

Clonakilty RFC started their 2018/19 season with a great win over Kanturk last Sunday in the County Cup. It wasn’t that long ago that Kanturk got the better of Clonakilty in the final of the same competition last, which made this win even sweeter!

It was a bright blustery day in Shannonvale as Clonakilty’s first XV started their campaign. Clonakilty dominated the opening half with a try in the first 5 minutes from Mark Purcell and conversion from Andy McCarthy. Kanturk opened their scoring with a successful penalty minutes later. But Clon continued to dominate with some great running play eager to breach the Kanturk lines. It wasn’t long when Clon ran over their 2nd try. Followed by a two more from JD O’Hea and Courtney Canning leaving the score 22-3 within the first 25 minutes. The home side continued to govern the game and even when Kanturk launched an attack the Clon boys put in some stellar defensive efforts with a great chase and tackle from Andy McCarthy. Kanturks attack grew in confidence in the last 5 minutes of the game and after a defensive blunder from Clon, the visitors made a super run and created a great try for themselves just before the break.

Half Time Score: Clonakilty 22: Kanturk 10

Kanturk started the second half with a new-found gusto and quickly attempted to bridge the gap with a second try putting the score at 22-17. Clonakilty responded well, and it was JD O’Hea who produced another great try extending Clonakilty’s lead once more. Kanturk showed why they hold the County Cup and put on a great display in the scrum and the breakdown, highlighting Clonakilty flaws. After a huge attack on the Clon line Kanturk went over for their 3rd try and conversion, bringing Clonakilty’s lead down to just 3 at 27-24. But Clonakilty worked hard for the last 10 minutes extend their lead and finish off the game. And it was a fantastic team try that finished the game, when Moss Downey stole the ball from a Kanturk line out then the Clon boys worked the ball through the phases until Joe Crowley launched over the line for Clons 6th try of the day, finishing the game 32-24 to the home side.

Clonakilty will be delighted with a positive start with the season but will refocus now for their 1st league game V Fermoy away with kick off at 2.30pm. But for now its onwards and upwards for Clonakilty RFC.
