Munster Junior League Division 2

Clonakilty 19: Thurles 8

Clonakilty’s first XV were back in league action this week with a great win away to Thurles. It was a tough game that put the team to the test but perseverance led them to hold out till the dying moments.

Thurles kicked off against the wind in good conditions and Clonakilty went on the attack from the off. In the first 5 minutes Clonakilty put themselves into a strong attacking position, working the ball well up into the homesides 22’. Eventually it was Batt Duggan who bound over the line for Clonakilty’s first try of the day. Clonakilty continued to grow in strength with some great play from Andy McCarthy and Aaron Hayes with numerous attempts to breach Thurles defences and break through the line. After 15 minutes the Clon men were again in a strong attacking position and this time is was Damien Kozik who made a break for the line and dove over for Clonakilty’s 2nd try. This was swiftly followed up with the conversion from Eoghan Deasy putting the visitors ahead by 12 points to nil. Thurles reacted well and started a fantastic counter attack that left Clonakilty defences on the back foot which led to the Tipperary men running over for a try within minutes pulling back the score to 12-5. Clonakilty were not going to allow Thurles back into the game in this half and continued to play well and work the ball into a good position. Clonakilty’s defence worked well together to make up for the try and forced Thurles back into their own half at many occasions. With 5 minutes to go in the half, Clonakilty launched another assault on the Thurles line working well to move the ball and find the space. In due course it was Mike O’Hea who carried the ball over the line for Clon’s 3rd try and with the conversion from Eoghan Deasy, Clonakilty went to the break with a confident lead over the home side leading 19-5.

Half Time Score: Clonakilty 19 – Thurles 5

The second half turned into a dog fight both sides fighting hard to gain power over the other and brutal battle ensued. Just after the break Thurles took an opportunity to bridge the gap and claimed 3 points from a penalty with a super kick from the Thurles out half. Thurles continued with the half with an assault on the Clonakilty defences. The half continued with neither side adding to their score board. Both sides had opportunities but errors from both saw the game stilted and let the half slip away. In the last 10 minutes the home side began a massive offensive game on Clonakilty which saw the closing minutes a tense watch. Thurles were given every opportunity to score but the Clonakilty defensive play must be hugely credited. Even when it seemed inevitable that Thurles would score, the Clon men put their bodies on the line to keep the Tipp men out and drive the play back off the Clon line. Until the dying seconds, Clonakilty kept working together to put up a wall of defence that could not be breached which was a hugely proud moment for players, coaches and supporters alike. The team will be delighted to make it 2 wins from 2 away games in the league and very positive start to the season!

Next week the team have a rest week before 6 games on the trot leading up to the Christmas break starting with Charleville at home on Sunday 4th November with kick off at 2.30pm.
