Munster Junior League Division 2

Clonakilty 25: Charleville 13

Clonakilty’s first XV were back in league action last Sunday when they took on Charleville at home in Shannonvale. Charleville kicked off as the rain started to fall making conditions a little more challenging. The visitors showed strength in act for the opening part of this game as they dominated at the breakdown and in the scrum. Clonakilty did well to try and control Charleville attacks. It was Clonakilty who were first to put some points on the board when Eoghan Deasy slotted over his first penalty. The game slowed for much of the half with neither side able to get into a fluid attack with a lot of start stop play. The Clon men began to gain control and after continued pressure on the Charleville advances Clonakilty forced a knock-on error on the Charleville line which Mike O’Hea took advantage of by swooping in and securing the ball down over the line to claim Clon’s first try. This was followed soon after up by another penalty awarded to Clonakilty which Eoghan Deasy again converted to 3 points putting the scoreboard at 11-0. The home side continued work hard to stretch their lead with some great work from captain Donal McSweeney and Mike O’Hea to name a few. Charleville were not going down without a fight though and worked hard to make up their previous errors. Eventually they were awarded when they ran over a try followed by the conversion bridging the gap to 11-7 at the break.

Half-time Score: Clonakilty 11: Charleville 7

Charleville started the 2nd half with some strong attacking play that put Clonakilty defences to the test. They were rewarded with a penalty early in the half which they slotted between the posts closing the gap to bring it within one point. Clonakilty responded well with some great attacking runs from Rob Howick, Eoghan Deasy and Aaron Hayes. Clonakilty gained another penalty which they took to the posts to gain another precious 3 points. But Charleville came back strong and were able to score another penalty within minutes to cancel out Clon’s efforts. But it was the home side that finished strongly. They were worked hard to gain momentum and launch a strong attack on the Charleville line. The Clon men worked hard to break down the strong Charleville scrum and authority of the game. Their hard work paid off when the team worked their way into a strong position and moved the ball quickly along the line and into the hands of Aaron Hayes who ploughed over the line and in for Clonakilty’s 2nd try. The Clon men continued to govern the play and Eoghan Deasy was able to convert to more penalties for Clonakilty before the final whistle leaving the final score at 25-13.

It was a solid performance from the Clonakilty men who worked hard to handle the strong Charleville side and gain their 3rd league win of the season. Next week the side play the next round of the Challenge Shield V Kinsale at home next Saturday with kick off at 2pm. Please come out and show your support and help keep Clonakilty’s winning streak going!
