Munster Junior Clubs Challenge Shield

Clonakilty 22: Kinsale 15

Clonakilty’s first XV were in Challenge Shield action last Saturday against old rivals Kinsale. Over the past few seasons, we have seen these sides do battle many times and always putting on an exciting game and too often a nail bitting finish!

Kinsale kicked off in the Vale into dry bright conditions but it was Clonakilty who dominated the first part of this game. Clon’s attacking game saw Kinsale defences put to the test with runs from Rob Howick and Maurice Shanley just held out of the danger zone. After a short spell it was Damien Koziak who was first to breach the Kinsale line running under the posts after 20 minutes. Shane Deasy followed up with the conversion putting the home side ahead. Clonakilty continued to dominate the attack with Kinsale struggling to keep the Clon men out of their half. Clonakilty struck a second time soon after moving the ball from the maul and with Ger McCarthy driving over the line. Deasy again followed it up with the conversion putting the score at 14-0. Within 5 minutes of the second try, Clonakilty were once again in an attacking position when they were awarded a penalty which Deasy kicked not far inside the Kinsale 22’. Batt Duggan took the line out, threw a far reaching ball which landed in the arms of Ger McCarthy who made a gallant run for the line, off loaded to Courtney Canning who bound over the line and in for Clonakilty’s 3rd try. Clonakilty now held a confident 19-0 lead over the Kinsale men which possible saw the home side relax in defence towards the end of the half, giving Kinsale the opportunity to run over a try just before the break running through Clon defences with ease. Kinsale now had well deserved points on the board to enable them to push on in the 2nd half.

Half Time: Clonakilty 19 – Kinsale 5

Clonakilty kicked off the 2nd half but it was Kinsale who asserted their dominance over much of the half. Kinsale began to break down the Clonakilty attacks at the break down and saw Clonakilty allow themselves back into old habits of giving away needless penalties. It wasn’t long before Kinsale were awarded a penalty which they slotted between the posts. Kinsale continued to dominate the half and were soon rewarded with a 2nd try followed swiftly by the conversion closing the gap on Clonakilty to 19-15. The Clon men worked hard to make up their errors and close out this game. Within the last 5 mins, Clonakilty were awarded a penalty which they smartly took to the post and saw Maurice Shanley slot over the bar to secure Clonakilty a 7-point lead coming into the dying moments. Credit must be given to both sides as neither team would give up the fight until the bitter end. Clonakilty had to maintain a very strong defence enable to keep out the wave of fiercely strong Kinsale attack. Eventually it was the home side with withstood the attack and came out the victors.

Clonakilty are back in League action next weekend as they travel to Waterford City on Sunday with kick off at 2.30pm.
