U14 Match Report

South Munster League Conference A

Clonakilty 17: Bantry 25

Clonakilty RFC U14s travelled to Bantry for their third league game of the campaign. Having suffered two previous loses and with the return of a number of their stronger players from injury hopes were high in the camp. In fact, it was the first time in the season that they had a full squad to pick from.

After winning the toss Clon elected to play with the elements and the fall of ground.  As with this team for most of their games they are slow starters however Clon drew first blood with an excellent try under posts from Killian Herlihy after a great forward surge. If was converted by Ronan Hayes. Bantry hit back straight away with an individual score from their no. 10, which he also converted. Clon found themselves under pressure after that when Bantry went in again soon afterwards with another converted try from their out half.  Clon were in and out of the game not getting any fluency and so it needed something inspirational to get them going. Their captain Patrick McCarthy was that inspiration and he crossed for a great try just before half time. His tackling and cover play had helped largely to keep Clon in the game.  However, Clon’s defence were having great difficulty in dealing with Banty’s out half and he crossed again just before half time.

Clon were still within touching distance of Bantry though not playing well, and needed a good start to the second half. Unfortunately, their defence was to leak two more tries within the first 10 mins of the second half and both were converted. Clon were to score the try of the game where a rare forward drive resulted in Paul Murphy bursting over for what was to be Clon’s final score. Clon competed well for the remainder of the game however struggled in too many areas to trouble a solid Bantry side with the final score 25-17.

The score line will flatter Bantry but were deserved winners for their overall play. Clon will have to stick with working on their basics and the tide will turn.
