Munster Junior League Division 2

Clonakilty 41: Waterford City 15

Last Sundays Clonakilty’s first XV travelled to the sunny South-East to take on Waterford City in the League. The Clon men were hoping to add to their winning streak so far this season and they did not disappoint with another impressive bonus point win.

Clonakilty kicked off into breezy but bright and clear conditions in Waterford and set themselves up with a great chase to put themselves in the power position. Clon dug in and worked the ball well at the breakdown and within the opening 5 minutes had gained themselves a penalty in front of the posts which Eoghan Deasy slotted over with ease. The game continued with Waterford trying hard to gain a handle on the strong Clon offensive. Their efforts were rewarded when they were handed their own penalty to tie up the game once again. Clonakilty grew in confidence and showed off their impressive running game with some great attacking play from Aaron Hayes and Damien Kozik. Clonakilty’s first try came from a penalty taken up the line. From there the ball came was quickly moved into the hands of Rob Howick who made a fantastic run to gain Clon their first try of the day. Clonakilty continued to dominate for much of the half with some great runs from space for Maurice Shanley and Victor Lovell to name a few. It was from a run from Rob Howick that saw the Clon men moved the ball quickly along the line and into the sturdy hands of Batt Duggan who bound over the line for Clonakilty’s 2nd try. It was followed up with the conversion from Eoghan Deasy putting Clonakilty ahead 15-3. Waterford continued to try and take their opportunities. Their opportunity came from sloppy Clon defence and the home side slipped through the clon defence and in to score their 1st try and conversion bridging the gap to 15-10. Clonakilty were adamant to make up from their defensive mistake and took back control for the rest of the half. Just before the break it was the turn of scrum half Joe Crowley to add to the score board with another well worked try for Clonakilty. Eoghan Deasy added to the tally with the conversion putting Clonakilty back into the driving seat with a lead of 22-10 at the end of the half.

Half Time Score: Clonakilty 22 – Waterford City 10

The Clonakilty men were now on the hunt for the crucial 4th try and didn’t take long for Aaron Hayes to make yet another fantastic break for the line to run over securing the vital bonus point. Waterford City became frustrated with Clonakilty dominance but the Clon men kept focused and continued to try and grow their lead. Fantastic work at the breakdown from Mike O’Hea and Donal McSweeney turning over the ball at every opportunity to maintain the physical hold Clon held over the home side. Batt Duggan dove over the line for a 2nd time with 20 minutes to go extending the Clonakilty lead further. Credit is duly deserved to Waterford who kept fighting to the bitter end and made sure that Clonakilty had to keep working until the final whistle. Their efforts were eventually rewarded when they managed to secure a second try with 10 minutes to go. But it was the Clonakilty boys who were truly valiant throughout the game with an incredible display for the full 80 minutes. And just at the final whistle the cherry on top came from Maurice Shanley who flew passed the Waterford City defence and between the posts for Clonakilty’s 6th try of the day. As Eoghan Deasy secured the conversion the final whistle confirmed the end of a great day at the office for Clons first XV. A fantastic display from a team that are growing in strength week on week and are on course for a great end to the first half of the season.

Next week Clonakilty are back at home in The Vale to take on Fethard & District in their league clash. Kick off is as always 2.30pm please come out and show your support.
