Munster Junior League Division 2

Clonakilty 18: Fethard & District 15

Clonakilty’s first XV overcame a resilient Fethard side last Sunday in the Vale. Clonakilty started the brighter of the two but saw themselves 7 points behind early on after a knock on in midfield led to Fethard getting a break away try. Clonakilty, high in confidence from their run stuck to their game plan and fought back to make it 3-7 after a well taken penalty from out half Eoin Deasy.

Clonakilty to battle throughout the first half but a strong Fethard defence stopped the home side from making any head way. The half continue with the Clon men trying to seek their opportunities but with no avail. Clonakilty finished the half with the knowledge that they could beat the physical Tipperary side but needing a different game to complete it.

Clonakilty bounced back into life in the second half with aggressive attacking play formalising the Clonakilty forwards Unfortunately Fethard were soon awarded a penalty in the 2nd half and grew their confidant momentum.  It wasn’t long until man of the season, Batt Duggan retrieved the ball from a well worked movement up the line to secure Clonakilty’s first try of the game. The conversion was followed up again from Eoghan Deasy, drew the score to 10 points apiece. Clonakilty pushed on for the rest of the half with some aggressive offensive play from Josh Wilcox, Mike O’Hea and Donal McSweeney. Eventually Clonakilty were rewarded with their aggressive attacking when Andrew McCarthy bound over the line for Clon’s 2nd try of the day. Play continued with either side not giving an inch. Both sides were successful between the posts, when both sides slotted over excellent penalties to keep the game almost equal at 18-15 to the home side.

Look at Josh go...Three hanging off him...What a Man

Clonakilty continued to hold resilient for the rest of the half with Clonakilty allowing no more points but also conceding no other points.

The Clon men produced a tight and durable second half that made sure that nothing would breach that line. The play continued, with neither side becoming dependant with each other and both seemingly to control the external game quite well. Under great attacking pressure from Clon, the team showed durability and gut to work out the win in somewhat tough condition. After 5 wins from 5 in the league Clonakilty RFC face their biggest test yet against League topper’s Mallow. It will be a huge away game from the club and hope to see any available travellers make their way to Mallow to help set up an explosive win and continue the sides dominance within the league.
