U16 Match Report

Munster Club U18 Conference 3

Clonakilty 31: Kinsale 12

This 5th round tie in the U16 league Conference 3 would decide the runners up in Conference 3 and therefore decide who would qualify for the cup section of the Munster U16 league
Clon had prepared well for this game with two focused training sessions during the week and were ready to go come Saturday morning. The weather was not playing its part however and torrential rain on Friday night and Saturday morning put the fixture in question. Thank’s to our club’s hard working grounds commitee and fixtures secretary Tony Rafferty, the game was ON! and what a game it was.

Clon started playing against a breeze which was largely irrelevant as but both these teams have tallented backs and kept the ball in hand for larger parts of the first half. Kinsale flew out of the blocks and after just 3min Clon were caught napping and off the pace of the game. Kinsale identified Clon’s poor ruck defense setup and made a big 20meter carry in tight before clearing the ruck and moving the ball wide. Clons backline defense was also cold and caught narrow as Kinsale released one of their fast wingers to go in unchallenged from 40meters for the openeing score  0 – 7.

Clon were stung. There is character in this team now however and the poor start and weather couldn’t dampen this team’s appétite for battle. The lads reorganised themselves and rose to the challenge.

Clon began by controlling posession and working their systems. Excellent carries from Cillian McDonald, Geariod O’Donovan, Aaron Donovan and Eoin Murphy, gave Clon the forward momentum they needed. Superb ruck technique from  Rory White, Cian Downey and Cameron Coone in the clearouts presented quick quality ball for the half backs to work with.

The defensive sets also had more focus and quality too and the first up tackles were excellent. Kinsale’s big runners were being stopped dead by Aaron and Gearoid Donovan, Rory White, Cian and Eoin Downey. Clon were showing by action  how much they wanted this game.

Ruck dominance restored and Jim Twomey passed with accuracy as Eoin Downey moved a backline that improves with each outing..

A sustained period of posession and pressure saw Rory White cross the line for Clon in the 10th min. Clon wanted more and built again immediately from the kickoff to put the impressive full back Eoghan Fergasson over in the 12th minute. Clon were flying now and attacking in groups, working hard to support eachother, controlling the ball and testing Kinsale’s defense. Eoin Downey mixed the point of attack using both the narrow and wide channells to good effect.

Luke McCarthy and Adam Crawford were a constant threat to the scrambling Kinsale defense. The atttack was now relentless yet patient and controlled. The pressure told with Adam Crawford and Tyler Abbey Henning crossing in the 17th and 28mins respectivly. These were two high quality tries constructed by a team playing with tempo and working as units.

Half Time  Clonakilty 28 Kinsale 7

Clon started the second half playing with the breeze. The expected fight back fom Kinsale duely arrived and much of the second half was played in Clons territory. The packs dominance receeded as the normally reliable scrum conceeded two penalties and a strike against  the head! The lineout also turned into a bit of a lottery and Clon will need to work on this in the coming weeks. Kinsale also started to get over the gainline a little more easilty than in the first half as Kinsale began winning the colissions and this gave them them the opportunity to build pressure and prevent Clon clearing their lines.

Kinsale’s pressure eventually told and they scored a try in the 55th minute .

Clon responded. Fergal Murphy and Grattan Neville came on and Clon refocussed. Set piece and ruck dominance returned and Clon once again controlled the game twoards the closing stages. A penalty awarded to Clon with 5min remaining was cooly knocked over by Eoin Downey.

Final Score Clonakilty 31 Kinsale 12

This a a huge result for the squad and the Club.  Clon U16’s will now take their place in the highest section of the south Munster league. This is well deserved given the effort put in by the players over the last 10 weeks. Clon cannot be caught in second place and can look forward to next Saturdays final round of Conference 3 away to Ballincollig and give the full squad game time.

Well Done Lads!!!!
