Munster Junior League Division 2

Clonakilty 7: Mallow 14

Clonakilty’s first XV travelled to Mallow last Sunday to take on the league toppers at home. The Clon men knew that they had a serious challenge ahead and were unfortunate in the end to endure their first loss of the season.

Clonakilty kicked off into the breezy conditions, but it was Mallow who dominated from the start. The home side showed off their impressive attacking play that Clonakilty found hard to contain. Within the first 5 minutes Mallow ran over their first try and conversion to take the lead. Mallow continued to dominate with Clon struggling to get to grips with the strong Mallow pack. Within the first 20 minutes Mallow made a superb break for the line to bound over the line and in for their 2nd try and conversion extending their lead to 14-0. The Clonakilty men never let their heads drop and began to regain control. The team finished the half strong with some strong attacking play. Clonakilty dominated the line out with some great work from Mike O’Hea, they managed to put themselves in dangerous attacking position. Clonakilty finished the half strong taking advantage of Mallow’s higher penalty count but were unfortunate not to convert the solid offensive play into scores. At the break Clonakilty were unlucky to have been able to put points on the board but were growing in confidence in the game that set up an exciting second half.

Half Time Clonakilty 0: Mallow 14

Clonakilty started the half strong and maintained good pressure on Mallow. Some fantastic work from the boot of Eoghan Deasy put Clonakilty once again up on the Mallow line. Clon continued to attack with a series of assaults on the home sides defences. The team worked well together moving the ball quickly up the line. Eventually Clonakilty showed their aggression and moved as a unit in the maul and drove the ball over the line with Damien Kozik landing the ball down gaining Clonakilty a well-deserved try. Eoghan Deasy followed up with the conversion and Clon confidence soared. Clonakilty continued to work hard for the rest of the game putting in immense work to keep Mallow from scoring in defence and equally actively attacking the line. Unfortunately, the clock kept kicking and Clonakilty were unlucky to not sneak in another try. Alas as the final whistle blew it was Mallow who came out the victors. It was a fantastic performance from the Clon who left nothing behind and fought till the bitter end. The score line did not truly reflect the battle that took place. Regrettably it was Clonakilty’s first loss this season, but they came away with a vital losing bonus point and denied Mallow a winning bonus point for the first time in the season.  The team showed grit and determination and will be back again stronger then ever.

Next week the team have a well-deserved rest week before they take on Kinsale at home in the league on the 16th December with kick off at 2.30pm.
