  • U18 Report
  • Munster Club U18 Conference 4 (Sat 1st Dec 2018)
  • Clonakilty 10: Ballincollig 20
  • Clonakilty travelled for a crucial tie to Ballincollig takin go on the team immediately above them in the table with a Munster Cup at stake. Clon needed a win to draw level and force themselves into a Playoff for a Munster Cup slot. Clon travelled without a few key Team members due to injury and illness but confident follows 4 successive wins. The squad was bolstered by the return of Rob Downey to Match day action.
  • Clon started brightly, running back the kick off through multiple phases and into the hosts 22. pressure led to a penalty in front of the posts and Thomas Tyner stepped up to slot the 3 pointer. The game settled into a good battle for the next 10 mins. Both sides carried the ball well but both defenses also proved up to the task. Clonakilty were dominant in the lineout, secure on their own ball and steal ball on the opposition throw in. Ballincollig possessed a good kicking game which led to Clon playing a lot of Rugby in their own half.
  • Ballincollig were to score the first try of the match. A probing deep kick to the corner had the Clon full back Kyle Buttimer isolate and in trouble. Ballincollig forced a penalty and kicked to the corner. They mauled the resulting lineout close to the line and a few good pick and go’s saw them over the line. The Conversion putting them into a 7-3 Lead.
  • Clonakilty were struggling to find fluency in their play evident in previous weeks especially in their back play. The forwards continued to carry well and a few phases of good interplay were unlucky not to get the breakthrough Clon needed. Ballincollig’s defense was good across the park however and just before half time they struck again. This time they found the space out wide off a few hard carries tight in themselves to increase their lead to 12-3 at half time.
  • Clon again pushed hard at the start of the second half but handling errors and the odd wrong option seemed to thwart their ambitions to score first. Matthew McCarthy who once again was prominent in much of Clon’s best play was forced off with injury with 20 minutes to go. A promising Ballincollig line break was stopped in its tracks by Kyle Buttimer who put in a crunching tackle and then won a penalty with Ballincollig holding on. Jim O’Hea was still ruling the air at lineout time and Jamie O’Donovan was putting in a captains shift at number 8. Danial Goodwin too put in a few Strong carrries.
  • It was Ballincollig who again scored however converting a penalty for off side and scoring a try in the corner off a well worked move off a 5-meter scrum in quick succession. With 15 minutes to go it was an uphill battle for Clonakilty with a 20-3 deficit. Clon however probably enjoyed some of their best passages of play on the run in as they pushed to close the gap. Several good breaks went close in the final few minutes. One final late push saw a sweeping backline move put Rob Downey into space taking the ball from the Clon 22 to beyond half way. A quick recycle and move on the blind side got the ball to Kyle Buttimer who kicked in behind the defense and managed to regather 5 meters from the line as he was tackled. Clon again recycled and following some had carried Jamie O’Donovan drove over. A deserved score to better reflect the efforts and performance by the lads on the day. A missed conversion saw the game finish in defeat 20-8. Ballincollig the stronger team on the day pick up the Munster Cup (Pan A) slot, Clonakilty will head into the Munster Plate (Pan B).
  • Clonakilty now have a few weeks to regroup and build for the Munster Plate. Important lessons on the areas to work on can be learnt from the match but overall the squad have made huge strides in the campaign to date.
