Munster Junior League Division 2

Clonakilty 26 – Kinsale 17

Clonakilty’s first XV were back in League action last Sunday for their last game of 2018. They took on old rivals Kinsale at home in the Vale and with things tight at the top of the table a win was a most for the Clon men.

After stormy weather on Saturday the game started in clear bright weather with all credit going to pitch maintenance as conditions were as good as they could be under foot. The competition became physical from the start with both sides undoubtly very aware of how important this contest would be. It was Kinsale who were first to make their mark on the score board when they were awarded a penalty after 5 minutes. Clonakilty responded well and worked hard to gain control over the impressive visiting side. Clonakilty were soon awarded their own penalty with Eoghan Deasy securing the points and tying up the game. The Clon men continued to dominate working the ball well up the line with some great work from Batt Duggan and Stephen Cotter. Eventually Clonakilty worked their way into a strong attacking position driving Kinsale back over their own try line and full back Aaron Hayes eventually touching the ball down to secure Clon’s first try. Deasy followed up with the conversion and secured Clonakilty’s lead at 10-3. Kinsale weren’t going away and began to create dominance over the Clonakilty defence. As the rain started to pour down Kinsale worked the ball up the line and pounced for the Clonakilty line and over for their first try.

This was swiftly followed with the conversion levelling up the game once again. The Clon men worked hard to make up for their defensive error with Mike O’Hea and Josh Wilcox making great strides to gain control. Clonakilty cleverly took their opportunities when they came, and it wasn’t long until Clonakilty were rewarded another penalty which once again Eoghan Deasy powered over the bar. It was the home side that dominated for the rest of the half. With some fantastic play from Graham Murray and JD O’Hea, the side moved the ball up the line seamlessly and into the hands of stalwart Ger McCarthy who bound over the line and over for another Clonakilty try. The conversion once again from Deasy finished up the half putting Clon 10 points ahead at the break and working well to hopefully secure the win.

Half Time Score Clonakilty 20: Kinsale 10

The second was a bitter contest with both sides trying hard to dominate and it was a dog fight until the bitter end. It was over 15 minutes until we saw another score and it was Kinsale who eventually claimed a second try and conversion after a period of high intensity attack that Clonakilty could not with stand.

The Clon men continued to do battle and tested the Kinsale defence at any opportunity. Some great work from Courtney Canning from the bench and Olan Deane saw a stream of great play from the home side. Clon once again took their opportunities and when they were awarded another penalty within the Kinsale half Eoghan Deasy once again took it to the posts to extend the home sides lead by 23-17. The game continued with more strong play from Clonakilty who maintained a powerful hold on an impressive Kinsale attack. In not ideal

conditions handling errors came from both sides with Clonakilty making more of the opportunities that came along. Once more Clonakilty were given a penalty and once more vital points came from the boot of Eoghan Deasy after a fantastic kicking performance that extended Clonakilty’s lead once more at 26-17. Clon’s impressive performance continued until the very last moments with a violent assault on the Kinsale line and were unlucky not to go over for another try. As the final whistle blew the Clon men were once again triumphant over their old rivals. It was once again a brilliant display from Clonakilty who finish off the first half of the season 2nd in the table and in a strong position. Overall it has been a fantastic 2018 for the Club and sets up hopefully an even better 2019.

The teams next game will be the re-fixed game V Castleisland on the 6th January at home in the Vale.
