Munster Junior League Division 2

Clonakilty 76 – Castleisland 0

Clonakilty’s first XV were back in action last weekend for their 1st game of 2019 taking on Kerry side Castleisland at home in the league. The Clon men had an outstanding game showing huge passion and announcing their intentions for rest of the season ahead.

The game started off with both sides trying to feel each other out and find their pace in the game. Clonakilty were unlucky at times in the first 20 minutes not to break through early with some near misses and handling errors causing the scoreboard to stay at 0-0. It wasn’t long though until Clonakilty found their stride and worked the ball up the line through the hands of Victor Lovell, JD O’Hea and a great surge from Olan Deane. Clonakilty’s passing showed some fantastic skill and eventually it was Ben Hodgins who went over for Clonakilty’s first try, followed up by the conversion from Eoghan Deasy. From then on in it was Clonakilty dominance throughout. Soon after the 1st try Eoghan Deasy slotted over a penalty to give the homeside a 10-0 lead. From the kick off again Clonakilty stole the ball and flew over the try-line for a second time, this time out-half Eoghan Deasy securing the points. Clonakilty continued to grow in confidence and in quick succession JD O’Hea made a phenomenal run to dodge any Castleisland defence that came on him and bound over the line for Clonakilty’s 3rd try. Clonakilty’s authority in every area continued for the rest of the half and just before the break JD O’Hea went on another fantastic run passing the ball into the arms of Victor Lovell who took it straight over the line and in for the crucial 4th try just at the end of the half. At the break Clonakilty

led 29-0 looking the stronger more confident side and eager for more in the second half.

Half Time Score - Clonakilty 29: Castleisland 0

Clonakilty took off again in the second half with another ferocious attack on the Castleisland defence. All credit to the Kerry side who battled hard to try and keep the home side out but the Clon attack was too strong and Josh Wilcox took the ball and crashed over the line within minutes for another Clonakilty try followed yet again by the conversion from the boot of Eoghan Deasy. The tries kept coming from Clonakilty with some super work from the line out from Mike O’Hea and Courtney Canning to name a few. It wasn’t long until JD O’Hea took flight again and secured a 6th try for the home side. Clonakilty continued to work hard and never took their foot off the pedal with Damien Kozik the next to get his name on the score sheet with another try putting the score at 55-0. The onslaught continued as scrum half Shane Deasy went over for the next try after a well worked attack up the pitch with some great work on the ground from Graham Murray and Olan Deane. This quickly followed by another superb try this time from Olan Deane and the conversion from Mark Purcell. As the clock continued to run down the Clon men continued to work hard turning ball over at the breakdown and never giving up. Castleisland tried hard towards the end of the game to put some points on the board and tested the Clonakilty defences but all praise to the Clonakilty defence who held firm and never let the visiting breach their lines. Clon still had one more try and conversion to go to finish off the game with Ben Hodgins going over once to finish the game with the final score reading 76-0.

It was a huge performance all over the field for the Clonakilty men who never let up and dominated from the get-go. What a way to start off 2019! Next week the side head to Old Christians to continue their league campaign with kick off as always at 2.30pm.
