Munster Junior League Division 2

Clonakilty 41 – Old Christians 0

Clonakilty’s first XV continued their fantastic run last Sunday when they travelled to take on Old Christians in the league. The Clon men, having faced Old Christians many times before, knew what they would have to work hard and maintain their composure against the very physical home side.

Clon kicked off, the growing wind blowing with them, a great advantage in the first half. The half started with both sides trying to gain physical dominance over the other and it took time for both sides to settle into the game. But it was Clonakilty took hold of the play and set the pace after 15mins of play. The boys kept their cool at the break down and kept working through the phases gaining territory all the time. Eventually it was Rob Howick Finglas who found the space to slip in and through for Clonakilty’s first try of the day and was followed up by the conversion from Eoghan Deasy. And from the kick off Clonakilty went on the attack again with an excellent kick up the line from Eoghan Deasy to put Clonakilty back within the Old Christians 22’. From there the team worked together passing the ball from captain Donal McSweeney along to Maurice Shanley who took huge strides towards the line and eventually gave it out to Rob Howick Finglas who once again bound over the line for Clonakilty’s 2nd try. Clonakilty continued to dominate for the rest of the half using their wind advantage well with some clever kick and chases to make sure that Old Christians defence was under pressure at every opportunity. Clon were able to gain another try before the end of the half when Mike O’Hea made a superb break for the line growing Clonakilty’s lead to 17-0. Old Christians worked hard for the last few minutes of the half and pushed the Clon defences to the test. But once again this Clonakilty team maintained composure at the break down and took the opportunities to push back the home side and out of the danger zone. The 1st half finished with Clonakilty clearly in front and looking the stronger side but having travelled to Old Christians they understood that this side wouldn’t give up the battle easily so a big second half performance was needed to finish off this game.

 Half-Time Score: Clonakilty 17 – Old Christians 0

The second half saw Clonakilty continue their dominance of this game and once again showed how this team have made huge strides throughout the season. Soon after the beginning of the half Clonakilty secured the important bonus point when scrum-half Shane Deasy hurdled over the line and over for the vital try, followed up with the conversion from Eoghan Deasy in not ideal kicking conditions. Not long after that it was the turn of hooker Batt Duggan to lock in a 5th try for Clonakilty without return. Everything seemed to go Clonakilty’s way, Old Christians not using the wind advantage and with Clonakilty dealing with the wind against them well. The Clon assault continued until the end of the game. Damien Kozik made a superb run for the line with 5 mins to go and secured another try with Deasy adding 2 more with the conversion once again. The Clon men never let up the huge pressure and maintained a strong attack. All respect goes to Old Christians as they continued to battle until the bitter end and made sure Clonakilty endured a fiercely physical battle as expected. But it was Clonakilty were the superior on the day and nothing showed off this more than Aaron Hayes’ last minute try which saw him make a huge break from the half way line then a crafty little kick up the line keeping it in touch then gathering it up and in a flash he was over the line for Clonakilty’s 7th try of the day just before the final whistle leaving the finishing score at 41-0 to Clonakilty.

It was another huge win for Clonakilty gaining a bonus point and leaving another team scoreless. The team has grown in strength, confidence and positivity which can be seen all over the pitch. Next week Clonakilty return to Shannonvale to take on Cobh Pirates in the league kick off at 2.30pm. Then on Tuesday 22nd Clon head to Irish Independent park for the semi-final of the Challenge Shield versus Ballincollig with kick off at 8pm.
