2nd Team Update

Junior 2 League Section 2

Clonakilty 29: Kinsale 10

On a beautiful, crisp Sunday morning last Clonakilty 2nd Team hosted Kinsale in the fifth round of league fixtures. To date Clonakilty had won three and lost one of their league games, their only defeat coming in the corresponding fixture away to Kinsale back in October.

The game started at a good tempo and Clon applied some early pressure looking for the first score. However, Kinsale's defence was up to the challenge and the match remained scoreless after 15 minutes. Then, suddenly, after two quick rucks from Clonakilty, Cathal O' Regan (Shannonvale) hit the line powerfully and broke through the Kinsale defence to score just to the left of the posts. The conversion was missed but Clon had been rewarded for all of their early pressure.

Kinsale came back at Clon immediately on the re-start and were rewarded with a try of their own to leave the scores level at 5 points apiece. Then Clon scored a cracking try, with the ball being put kept alive through numerous phases before Shane Coomey sprinted down the left touchline and dived at full stretch to score in the left corner, a score which put Clon back in front again.

A further try from Rob Howick following a further period of sustained pressure from the Clon pack, as well as another Kinsale try meant Clon entered the half time break leading 17 points to 10.

The second half was highly entertaining with both teams going at each other like heavy weigh boxers slugging it out in the ring. Clon used fresh legs off the bench which seemed to give them the edge entering the final stages, and further tries from Ewan Courtney and Olan Fehily rounded off a very satisfactory outing for the boys in green & red. Final score: Clonakilty 29 Kinsale 10.

A really good atmosphere is developing among this team which has a nice mixture of youth and experience. Hugh O' Neill had a cracking game at tight head, while Cathal O Regan (The Retreat) and Jack Ryan must surely have caught the eye of the first team coaches who were present. Conor Murphy, Duncan Cook, Gearoid Brennan and Cathal O Regan (Shannonvale) put in a huge amount of work in the tight while Moss Downey and Michael Peter O' Regan were calm and controlled, linking well with those around them and making numerous tackles. On the subject of tackles, Cathal Mortell excelled in the number 6 jersey, cutting off numerous Kinsale attacks just as they started to gain momentum, while Nathan Continet made a very big impression when introduced for the second half.

The new half back partnership of Rob Howick and Olan Fehily varied their game well and were always looking for the half chance to make a break and test the Kinsale back row. Sean Beamish and Killian O Driscoll were very sound defensively in the mid-field, while the Courtney brothers Ewan and Fionn didn't put a foot wrong and always posed a threat. Alex Moore showed his undoubted skills, pace and ability while Shane Coomey simply seems to be getting better with every outing. The ageless Pheilim O Neill was a calming influence at full back, always looking to come into the line and doing the basics without any fuss.

This win now means that Clonakilty 2nd's top their section of the league with one game remaining. It is hoped that a lot of these players will put pressure on their counter parts on the 1st team in an effort to continue what has been a very successful season for all to date. Keep up the good work lads!
