U16 Munster Club U16 Cup 4th Round

Clonakilty 35: Douglas & Carrigaline 5

The penultimate round of the Munster Club U16 Cup Group 2 saw Clon on the road to Cork to play Douglas & Carrigaline in Mahon. Near perfect playing conditions and a superb playing surface at Mahon invited both teams to play open attacking rugby. Several changes in Clon’s starting 15 presented an opportunity for each player in what is now a very competitive squad. All were looking to make a case to play in the remaining crucial league game v Clonmel next Saturday.

Clon won the toss and elected to play into the moderate breeze. The game’s opening exchanges saw Douglas-Carrigaline take control. Poor Clon defense let Douglas make easy meters as they moved the ball deep into Clon’s 22. Their busy 9 identified Clon’s poor blindside ruck defense and passed accurately to hit their number 8 who crashed over for the opening try after 5min.

Clon need to react and get up to the pace of the game. Gearoid O’Donovan, Connor Ryan and Charlie O’Shea took the responsibility up front and started to make their presence felt. Quality support and ruck technique from Thomas O’Donovan, Ciaran McCarthy and Rory White continued Clon’s advantage in the possession stakes. Tomas O’Suilleabhan was also working hard at no 9 directing his pack at the ruck. Pack leader Charlie O’Shea lead the way for Clon and crossed for their opening score after 28min. This was followed by a superb touchline conversion by Captain Eoin Downey.

Douglas regrouped and responded with some very physical carries themselves, but the half time whistle went before the score board moved again - Douglas-Carrigaline 5 Clon 7.

Clon started the second half with the assistance of the breeze and Eoin Downey played the elements superbly. He varied the game from 10 mixing a quality kicking game and passing game.

Clon started working in units with everyone executing their role. Discipline which had been poor in the first half also improved. Good ball retention, patience and organization meant Clon create some tempo and dominate territory.

Excellent running lines by Luke McCarthy and Adam Crawford repeatedly stretched Carrigaline’s defense. The ball rarely got to the industrious wingers Adam Asare and Tim McCarthy however and this is something that the backline will have to work on this week. Clon introduced Cameron Coone, Jim Twomey and Ryan Jennings with the impressive Eoghan Fergusson moving to 12.

Clon were building pressure now and Adam Crawford went over to give Clon the comfort they needed on the scoreboard to lead 5 - 14. Clon’s work rate was eventually up to standard. They dominated rucks, ball quality improved and they started playing at a much higher tempo not allowing Carrigaline’s defense the time to reset. Player were now thinking on their feet moving the point of attack.

15min into the second half and Gearoid O’Donovan a prop who gets better with each game was rewarded with a quality try. Clon were comfortable now and playing deep in Carrigaline’s half. The defense was now solid and working to not let Carrigaline out easily.

Liam O’Connell, Eugene O’Donovan and Ryan O’Leary joined the game and tries followed for Eoghan Fergusson and Tim McCarthy. Final Score:  Douglas Carrigaline 5 Clonakilty 35
