Munster Junior League V Ballincollig 10th February 2019   13/02/2019

Munster Junior League Division 2

Clonakilty 40 – Ballincollig 5

Clonakilty’s first XV were back in league action this week as they took on Ballincollig away in Tanner Park. The Clon were fired up and ready to dominate. The 1st half saw a siege of Clonakilty attacking plays with some fantastic running play from the backs. 10 minutes after the start Clonakilty secured their 1st try of the day when Cathal O’Regan dove over the line. The Clonakilty assault continued with some fantastic ball skills working their way up the line and into the hands of JD O’Hea who confidently ran over the line and in for Clon’s 2nd try, followed up with the conversion from Eoghan Deasy. Clonakilty sustained the pressure on Ballincollig defences and our running game ran rings around the home side. It didn’t take long for Clonakilty to strike again and this time is was full back Aaron Hayes who secured a 3rd try for Clon. Once again Eoghan Deasy secured the extra 2 with the conversion to put the score at 19-0. The Clon men worked hard all over the pitch to never give Ballincollig an inch. Then with just over 30 mins played, Clonakilty secured the vital bonus point with another fantastic Aaron Hayes try and the conversion from Eoghan Deasy. As the half came to a close, JD O’Hea made another superb break and bound over the line for a 5th try unreturned. With a substantial lead at the break Clonakilty were firmly in the driving seat and knew they had the game won as long as they kept their heads and didn’t let the home side to gain any momentum.

Half-time Score – Clonakilty 33: Ballincollig 0

The second half of the game was mismatch of poor play from both sides. Clonakilty secured the win with a sixth try soon after the start of the half when Moss Downey made a break for the line and gave it out to Courtney Canning who eventually put it down over the line and with the conversion from Deasy Clonakilty were 40 points up and sailing to victory. The Clon men, now happy that they had done enough to secure the win did take the foot of the gas and allowed Ballincollig to come somewhat back into the game, with the home side securing their one and only try. The game continued on with a lacklustre display from both sides to finish off the game with the score 40-5 at the whistle.

It was a good first half performance from Clonakilty who secured the bonus point win within the first 30 minutes. Next week the Clon men are on the road again when they take on Muskerry away in their penultimate league game of the season with kick off as always at 2.30pm. Please come up and show your support.
