Munster Junior League Division 2

Clonakilty 20 – Muskerry 8

Clonakilty’s first XV took on Muskerry away last Sunday in their penultimate league. The squad knew that a win would secure promotion, so it was a vital game against a strong Muskerry side. Muskerry kicked off playing against the strong wind and from the off both sides went to work. Muskerry are always a difficult side to play against at home but Clonakilty worked hard to put themselves into an attacking position but Muskerry put up a strong defensive line. The half continued for almost have half an hour with neither side able to breach the other sides line. It was Clonakilty who were first to strike when Rob Howick ran over Clon’s first try after some great work throughout the field from Donal McSweeney and Josh Wilcox. It wasn’t long until Clonakilty grew their lead when they took advantage of Muskerry’s error and were awarded a penalty in front of the posts which Eoghan Deasy slotted over for the 3 points. Muskerry worked their way back into the half for the final minutes of the half when they punished Clonakilty with a huge attack on the Clon line which the Clon men could not withstand and it led to the home side going over for a try just before half time whistle. With only three points in it was going to be a tough second half but Clonakilty seemed ready and eager to secure the win.

Half-time Score – Clonakilty 8: Muskerry 5

Clonakilty showed off some fantastic skills for the next 40 minutes that shows why they deserve their place in the Junior 1 league. The Clon men worked hard to break down defences with some fantastic work at the breakdown from Courtney Canning, Stephen Cotter and Graham Murray to name but a fewThis help to get the ball to our super backs JD O’Hea, Olan Fehily and Rob Howick. Playing against the wind it was a day when a kicking wasn’t an option but sibling half backs Shane and Eoghan Deasy worked well to take the opportunities when they could. From all this great play came a wonderful team try that was eventually carried over the line by Stephen Cotter. Muskerry showed their strength again though when they managed to pull back another 3 points with a penalty putting the score at 13-8. Clonakilty continued to work hard and after another fantastic break from Rob Howick, the ball was worked up through the line and into the ever ready JD O’Hea who took off at speed to claim a second try for Clonakilty. Eoghan Deasy added the extra 2 putting the score at 20-8 and the crowd went wild! The Clon men were resilient in both defence and attack and controlled the game for the rest of the half, creating many opportunities but all credit goes to Muskerry’s defence who didn’t allow any more Clonakilty tries. As the full time whistle blew Clonakilty players, coaches and supporters were elated as they now had secured promotion with one more game to go in the league. “Clon Boys are We” rang out and it was a fantastic moment for the club and a well-deserved reward for a marvellous season. Bring on J1 rugby!

Next week the team travel back to Irish Independent Park to take Cobh Pirates in the Challenge Shield final, a competition Clonakilty won last season. Kick off next Sunday evening is at 6pm. Lets keep the good times going and come and show your support.
