Cork County Cup Final

Clonakilty 20: Bandon 31

Last Saturday night our first team took on old rivals Bandon in the final of the County Cup. It was a tough battle the team fought till the bitter end and put in a brave performance.

Bandon were the first to get on the scoreboard with a fantastic run away try and conversion. Clonakilty were able to stay in touch when Eoghan Deasy slotted over a penalty to bring it back to 7-3. Clonakilty worked hard to try and set up an attacking but Bandon’s physicality and skill kept out any type of attack. The game continued with Bandon adding another 3 points when awarded a penalty. Clonakilty responded well and took their opportunities as Eoghan Deasy punted the ball between the post for a 2nd time. At the half hour mark the Clon men appeared to be getting some grasp on this strong Bandon side and were setting up an attack when from nowhere, Bandon intercepted a pass, sailed past the ill-prepared Clonakilty defensive line and over for a 2nd impressive try and conversion. Clonakilty were outworked in the 1st half and hoped for a better 2nd half performance.

Half Time Score - Clonakilty 6: Bandon 17

The second half started slowly and saw both sides working hard to gain the upper hand. But it was Bandon who looked the stronger opponents and were awarded 2 tries with 2 successful conversions, strengthening their lead by 31-6. The Clonakilty men though battled on and showed true determination to amend their earlier mistakes. The back line made some fantastic attacking runs that put Bandon defences through their paces and coming into the final quarter of the game Clonakilty looked strong. The teams work was eventually repaid when Ruslan Dorogan bound over the line and in for Clonakilty’s first try, followed by the conversion from Eoghan Deasy. Clon continued to play well until the bitter end and seemed to work better as a team. With a mere 5 minutes to go, Damien Kozik broke through for a second Clonakilty try. Eoghan Deasy again added the extra 2 points to bring the score to 31-20 a far fairer picture of the game. Until the bitter end, Clon continued to fight but the clock ran out and Bandon were the victors. It was a disappointing end to a fantastic season for our 1st team but will be gunning to get back to Junior 1 rugby in September!
