Munster Junior League Division 1

Clonakilty 16 – Clanwilliam 16

Clonakilty’s first XV travelled to Tipperary last weekend to take on Clanwilliam in their second J1 league game of the season. The Clon men were hoping to build from their impressive performance against Bandon last weekend but came up against an ever strong oopposition in Clanwilliam.

Clonakilty kicked off into dry and slightly blustery conditions and started off needing a strong defence. The team maintained good defensive pressure for a time but Clanwilliam laid out a solid attack that saw them burst over the line and in for their first try after 10 minutes. Clonakilty set up a good counter attack with a fantastic steal in the lineout from Olan Deane. Clon were soon rewarded with a penalty which Eoghan Deasy slotted over to bring it to 5-3. The Clon men retained the ball for much of the half but handling errors allowed the resilient Clanwilliam defence to keep them at bay. Clonakilty made some decent attacks but couldn’t finish it up with a score. Clanwilliam were awarded a penalty just before the end of the half which they secured, stretching their lead to 8-3. Clonakilty would need to work hard in the second half to stay in the game.

Half-time Score – Clonakilty 3: Clanwilliam 8

Clanwilliam kicked off the second half and within minutes added another 3 points to the board with a penalty kick. But it was Clonakilty showed grit and determination for the rest of the half to make up for their errors in the first 40mins of the game. Clon injected energy into the second half with some fantastic attacks from Shane Scannell and Mark Purcell. Clanwilliam’s ill-disipline cost them meters and possession which Clonakilty took full advantage of. It was from a Clonakilty scrum that the ball was moved out the wing with a super pass from Graham Murray into the hands of Peter Shallow who bound over the line and in for Clonakilty’s first try. Eoghan Deasy added the 2 with his conversion to bring Clon right back into the game and only trailing by a point 11-10. Clonakilty continued to dominate with great work from Mike O’Hea, Donal McSweeney and Cathal O’Regan on the ground. Yet again Clanwilliam’s ill-discipline cost them when Clon were awarded a penalty which Deasy sent straight between the posts stealing the lead 11-13. Clonakilty continued to appear dominant and hoped to add to their tally but as they worked the ball through the hands, a long pass was intercepted by Clanwilliam who caught Clon unawares and took off for the line and secured a second try taking back the lead 16-13. Clon never gave up and continued to seek out another scoring opportunity. The Clonakilty men fought hard against a physical Clanwilliam but with a mere 5 minutes to go Clonakilty were once again rewarded with a penalty which Eoghan Deasy correctly took to the posts and slotted over the bar to tie up the game 16 points apiece. It was nerve wracking finally few minutes for Clonakilty but did fantastically well in defence to keep out Clanwilliam who were on the hunt for a 3rd try and the game finished  16-16.

Clonakilty had an excellent 2nd half performance that could have seen them win it out but will be happy to walk away with 2 points secured.

Next weekend the team are back in Shannonvale where they take on Abbeyfeale in their next league game with kick off at 2.30pm. Please come out and show your support.
