Munster Junior League Division 1

Clonakilty 20 – Newcastle West 21

Clonakilty’s first XV took on a strong Newcastle West at home in Shannonvale last Sunday. The game kicked off into cold but dry conditions and Clonakilty went on the attack from the start. The home side started well and were rewarded a penalty within the first few minutes which Eoghan Deasy slotted over. Clonakilty continued to work hard doing well to break down the Newcastle West defence. Their efforts were soon rewarded when Clon worked the ball through the hands to find the space and into the arms of Peter Shallow valiantly bound over the line for Clonakilty’s first try in the corner. Deasy followed up with the conversion giving Clon 10-0 lead. Newcastle West fought their way into the game with a fast running attack that put the Clon defences to the test. Clonakilty held out well for a period putting in some tough tackles. Eventually the solid Newcastle West attack fought their way through and over for their first try of the day followed up with the conversion bridging the gap to 10-7. The game grew tighter again with both sides putting in a very physical shift. Newcastle West were awarded a kickable penalty which they slotted over to tie up the game 10 points apiece. The half continued with good attacking play from Clonakilty but not converting to scores. Patience was needed against the sturdy Limerick men. It wasn’t long until Clonakilty gained their own penalty with Eoghan Deasy converted to take back the lead. Newcastle West finished the half strong and tested the homeside’s defence to the max. This led to another Newcastle West penalty which they successfully slipped between the uprights tying up the game again just before the break 13 all.

Half Time Score: Clonakilty 13- Newcastle West 13

Newcastle West kicked off the 2nd half and started the stronger side coming into their own. The Clon men worked hard to keep the visitors at bay but strong Newcastle West grew stronger with every moment. Their work rate eventually became too much for Clonakilty and they ran over a 2nd try to take the lead 13-18. Clon were unlucky with some penalty decisions that stopped them from changing the tide of the game. Newcastle West continued to dominate and were soon able to grow their lead with a penalty putting the score at 13-21. Clonakilty stayed resilient until the bitter end and showed heart to keep fighting. As the clock ran down Clonakilty never gave up and Eoghan Deasy made a fantastic run for the line that started a brilliant Clon attack.  Then from a line out Clonakilty worked together to allow Olan Deane take the ball and run over a last minute try for Clonakilty. Deasy secured the extra 2 points with the conversion and brought the score back to 20-21. Unfortunately, it was too late to keep the momentum going as the game ended after the next play. Clonakilty managed to secure a vital losing bonus point and denied Newcastle West the bonus point victory.

It was a valiant effort from Clonakilty who just came up against a stronger side on the day. Next weekend the team are off duty and will be back in league action on Saturday 23rd November away to Crosshaven with kick off at 2.30pm.
